Sketching an elephant and
here I draw in with a pencil the main shapes of the elephant, the main part
of the elephant is the trunk so I make sure
that
this is drawn in properly. I don't draw the elephant in detail with pencil
but just enough information to carry on with it in charcoal.

Starting to apply charcoal on the trunk now and blending it in with my
little finger. I generally start to draw from left to right because I'm left
handed naturally, if I had started working from right to left I wouldn't be
able to rest my hand on the paper without smudging the drawing.

Here darks have been put in and I then lift this dark charcoal what I
have just put down and use it for middle tones like in the ear and down the
side of the face. The tusks have been laid in and notice that the far tusk
has been put in rather sketchily as this is further back than the other one
which is more forward so needs to be brought out more with dark line.

Here I use a charcoal pencil to show the form of the head and here we are
talking about line, can you see that the line isn't a continuous line but in
different degrees of light and dark, this gives variety of line and shows
the subject more in a three dimensional way.

More wrinkles are added but I don't put all the wrinkles in, just the
important ones that show the elephants form.
I
show the creases of the trunk and notice that these lines follow the
curvature of the trunk.
