Nude drawing with charcoal demonstration
and here I used a large 24"x18" size cartridge paper and first I drew in the basic shapes with a pencil, a diagonal line running straight through her body to indicate the movement of the way the body curves. A diagonal line has been drawn in for her breasts and one for her hips, be careful to get the angles right here by using the pencil to capture these angles, these lines are only a rough guide to get me going through the drawing.
Here I put in both shoulders and also her right arm which is resting on a table, see how the top half of her right arm curves outward, then curves inward and then at the elbow curves out again. This has to be right otherwise the arm and hand wont look as though it is resting on the table, also more shape has been added to the head.
At this point I roughly put in her breasts and you can see how far off I was with my basic lines here but it doesn't matter they were only guidelines, it is best not to adhere to your basic lines too accurately, what we want here is a fluid and free drawing. You can measure from the top of her head to her chin with the pencil held vertically and mark off with your forefinger where the chin comes and then keeping this measurement compare from the bottom of the chin to where her breasts start, both these distances are the same.
Here we show detail of the head and you can see its quite loosely drawn in and you can start any drawing in this way as long as you keep it lightly drawn and then later you can work on it to a more finished drawing.
More of the body has now been drawn in and the diagonal line I drew through her body was quite accurate here, you can also see how her body moves from the top right of her head to the bottom left of her knee in a slight diagonal. Although her right arm is bent from the elbow joint if you held a pencil vertically from her shoulder to the heel of her right hand you would find that it is vertical at these two points.
Once I had lightly drawn in the shapes and lines I then made them slightly darker and at the same time trying to be a bit more accurate here but still keeping a loose hand.
